Republic of South Ossetia is located оn the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range in the area of 3900 square meters. Тhe capital is the city of Tskhinval.
One-tenth of the surface occupied by the Republic of the foothills.
The rest of the territory - the mountainous terrain height from 850 to 3938 meters above sea level.
The highest point - Mount Halatsa (3938 m).

Commentary of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

On 1 of October during the meeting with UNDP Head Helen Clark the Minister of Foreign Affairs Maya Panjicidze stated that UNDP projects in Abkhazia can be realized in South Ossetia.


UNDP is, no doubt, important and useful agency of recognized value and merit. However, taking decisions of possibility for one or another international agency to fulfill its activity at the territory of sovereign state – the Republic of South Ossetia are authorized only competitive organs of state power of the Republic, but not Georgian foreign office.

Pertaining to the statement of I. Garibashvili at UN GA 69th session

On 26 of September Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili made a speech at the 69th session of UN General Assembly. During the speech Garibashvili declared that Georgia “still aims to settle peacefully August war 2008 and put an end to Russian occupation”, and “to become a supplier of security, not just its user”. Garibashvili also noted the annually enhancing support of UN member states on Georgia’s resolutions pertaining to refugees and IDPs and called all UN members to continue this practice in future.

Pertaining the statement of G. Margvelashvili

The President of Georgia after visiting the military airdrome and obviously satisfied by observing Georgian military helicopters flights made very strange statement that Georgia plans to regain the territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia solely by peaceful means “and if Russia recognize that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are part of Georgia it will no longer be the enemy of Georgia”.

On 8 of September Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of South Ossetia in the Republic of Abkhazia O. I. Botsiev arrived to Tskhinval for consultations.


Ambassador met with the President of the Republic of South Ossetia L. H. Tibilov. The meeting was also participated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia D. G. Sanakoev.

Commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

South Ossetian leadership stated more than once that first priority in foreign policy for South Ossetia is further integration with Russian Federation. The process of integration between two states is going on intensively. To date there are signed more than 70 international agreements, a number of new agreements are presently in process of elaboration, besides, negotiations of signing of new agreement of friendship and cooperation are under way.

Amendments made on August 4, 2014 in the Federal law “Of citizenship of Russian Federation” and some legislative acts of Russian Federation oblige Russian citizens to inform about availability of foreign citizenship, residence permit or any other actual document of permission to permanent residence in foreign state.

Pertaining to NATO summit in Wales

At Wales NATO summit conducted on 4-5 September Georgia received a considerable stack of “Enhanced cooperation” that although not granting a membership in Alliance but empowers Georgia’s access to intelligence, to participation in military trainings and strengthens cooperation in defense sphere. Besides, United States through the head of Defense Ministry Chuck Hagel who met with his Georgian college in Tbilisi on September 7, called for Russia to withdraw troops from Georgian border.

Announcement of the press-service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia



A working meeting between members of delegation of South Ossetia at Geneva Discussions headed by Presidential Envoy on post conflict resolution Murat Jioev with Co-Chairmen of Geneva Discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia, representing EU, OSCE and UN, took place in Tskhinval on 15 June 2014.


The main subject of the meeting was devoted to preparatory work on 29th round of Geneva Discussions planned for beginning of October.

Commentary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia

Amendments to the Federal Law of RF on Citizenship were made in June 2014. According to the amendments that come into effect in August 2014, those citizen of Russia that have double citizenship are obliged to inform Federal Migration Services. Information concealment is under administrative and criminal responsibility.
