Republic of South Ossetia is located оn the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range in the area of 3900 square meters. Тhe capital is the city of Tskhinval.
One-tenth of the surface occupied by the Republic of the foothills.
The rest of the territory - the mountainous terrain height from 850 to 3938 meters above sea level.
The highest point - Mount Halatsa (3938 m).

March 24 saw the 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council adopting the Resolution on Cooperation with Georgia where the absolutely baseless alarm about “human rights and humanitarian situation in South Ossetia” and the impossibility of access of international observers to South Ossetia territory was stated. The document was formulated and submitted at the session by Georgia.

In anticipation of presidential elections and the referendum on resumption of the historic name “the State of Alania” to South Ossetia scheduled for April 9, 2017 a meeting of officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was organized on March 21, 2017.


The participants discussed the internal political situation in the Republic and once again emphasized the necessity to maintain it within a legal framework.

March 20 saw the parliamentary delegation of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) accompanied by the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality visiting Khurvaleti, a Georgian settlement located at the border with the Republic of South Ossetia.

Comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

The Agreement between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation about the procedures for certain divisions of the RSO Armed Forces entry to the structure of Russian Armed Forces that is currently under preparation for signing caused strong feelings among Georgian political and public community as it allegedly violates “the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Georgia” and “destabilizes the situation in the region”.

Working visit of the delegation of the Republic of South Ossetia consisting of Alan Kochiev, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of South Ossetia, and Narim Kozaev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Ossetia in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, is going on.


The delegates participated in commemoration events dedicated to the 4th anniversary of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez’s death. Alongside with this members of the delegation met with Vladimir Zaemskiy, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Venezuela. Meetings with delegations of several states that also took part in ceremonies were organized as well.
