Comment of the Ministry of Foreign affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia on the Upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago

It is known that on May 20-21, 2012 the next summit of the North Atlantic Alliance will take place in Chicago. Georgia has great expectations for the forthcoming summit. The Georgian leadership hopes that the Alliance countries will designate Georgia as one of the ‘advanced countries for membership in NATO’ at the NATO Summit in Chicago. Georgia`s representatives surely love to sew on all sorts of attractive labels on their country, and it does not upset anyone in South Ossetia. However, the fact that it is happening not without the open support and flirtation from the side of NATO member-countries concerns the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia.

This increased push of Georgia into NATO reminiscents of August 2008. After all, no one doubts that such a comprehensive political and military support from Alliance member states provided for the Georgian leadership inspired Georgia in August 2008 to unleash military aggression against the Republic of South Ossetia unprecedented in its cruelty and perfidy. The people of South Ossetia were killed by the military personals trained by the instructors from some NATO member states.

Nearly four years have already passed but Western countries and the United States have not drawn the appropriate conclusions and have not condemned Georgia`s aggression, but on the contrary they continue the policy of military support and actively contribute to its remilitarization. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia appeals to the Alliance to refuse definitely to follow the path of revision because today Tbilisi is being tempted (as it happened last time) to target on force, and this is the fundamental drawback of the Georgian authorities` policy. It is clear that this unhealthy and conformist stance will not contribute to strengthening of security in the Caucasus and in the interest of stability in the region.
