Comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

Pertaining to a statement made by Leonid Kalashnikov, Russian State Duma member

The statement of Leonid Kalashnikov, Russian State Duma member, made during an interview to RIA Novosti on November 16, 2016, surprised people in South Ossetia very much. According to Mr.Kalashnikov “…provides Moldova comes to a solution of its territorial conflict in Pridnestrovie, having it solved in a confederation sort, and keeps on developing relations with Russia, it will be an example for solution of conflicts in Georgia and Ukraine”.

Perhaps, while talking of conflicts in Georgia, honorable Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs kept in mind some internal conflicts or territorial claims inside current Georgia. But if he had in mind relations of Georgia with its neighboring states - the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia, then we unfortunately have to admit that these words show he doesn’t have the foggiest idea of the political realities which developed in the region.

Mr. Kalashnikov should know that the Republic of South Ossetia has relation neither to the territory of Georgia, nor to its territorial division. The Georgian-Ossetian conflict was exhausted in August 2008. “Territorial conflicts” between Georgia and South Ossetia Mr. Kalashnikov is speaking about are results of sick imagination of representatives of Georgian authorities who despite obvious facts, proceed from never existing “territorial integrity” and do not react on numerous offers made by the authorities of the Republic of South Ossetia to get to delimitation of frontier between the states. Moreover, to settle the relations, Georgia refuses of signing a document on non-use of force.

The Republic of South Ossetia was formed in the same conditions of the USSR’s dissolution and in accordance with the same international legal regulations, than other states in the former Soviet Union. It passed consistently all steps of a state construction process. Long-term fight of the people of South Ossetia against permanent Georgian aggression for freedom and independence culminated in pacification of Georgian aggressor by Russia and recognition of independence of the Republic of South Ossetia on August 26, 2008 by the Russian Federation, which was followed by other states.

People of South Ossetia are grateful to the authorities of the Russian Federation for the given support, and to Russian MPs, including members of the CPRF in State Duma, who unanimously accepted addresses to the President of the Russian Federation on recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia.

The Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation build the most friendly relationships in firm legal contractual framework, that already consists of more than 100 bilateral documents, including the Agreement on Interparliamentary Cooperation signed between the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia and the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

The irreversibility of the decision made by the authorities of the Russian Federation on recognition of the state independence of South Ossetia, as well as the permanence of the course pursued by the Russian Federation on further support given to independent South Ossetia and its people in all spheres of cooperation were emphasized not once by representatives of Russian government.
