The Announcement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in connection with the third anniversary of the armed aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia in August 2008

On 7-8 August 2011, memorable events devoted to the third anniversary of the armed aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia are being held in the capital of the Republic of South Ossetia.

Three years ago on the night of 7/8 August Georgia treacherously attacked South Ossetia. The calculation of Georgian leadership was hideously cynical. While the whole world was following the opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Georgian Army trained after the NATO system tried to seize South Ossetia with lightning stroke. Georgian authorities failing to override the Ossetia people through the blockade and terror decided to wipe them off the map. But Georgian Blitzkrieg plans smashed against the fortitude and courage of South Ossetia and Russian peacekeepers defense force. The defenders of Tskhinval had been bunting the attack of the superior numbers of enemy troops for three days. Ossetian fighters accepting unequal battle were fighting heroically for every house, for every meter of their motherland. Only the determined interference of the Russian Federation which implemented the operation on the compulsion of Georgia to peace rescued the people of South Ossetia from holocaust.

We regret to state that this sabre-rattling became possible thanks to the support of political ambitions of Georgia by a number of countries, and among them the USA, and up to now the international community has not condemned Georgia authorities actions which led to numerous human victims and destructions. More over after Hilary Clinton had visited Georgia in June 2010 a new term appeared in the world policy, groundlessly used to South Ossetia and Abkhazia- ‘occupied territories’.

According to the conclusions made in their report by EU Independent Committee headed by Heidi Tagliavini as for the factors which had caused the war, it was Georgia that started hostilities against South Ossetia. However, despite the confirmed fact of Georgian aggression and undermining impact of western arming and hardware delivery to Georgia, some countries continue to adopt resolutions on Georgia which state single-sided that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are ‘occupied territories’. Such unwillingness to see and to agree with the changed and existing reality only heat up refighting moods of Georgia and it is doubtless that they will assist peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in the days of the third commemorate anniversary of August 2008 tragic events appeals to all the countries of the world to denounce the military aggression of Georgia against the people of South Ossetia and to assist in bringing the culprits to responsibility which will bring cherished peace to Transcaucasia.

Memorable activities devoted to the third anniversary of the outbreak of war Georgia against South Ossetia will be also held in the Embassies of the Republic of South Ossetia in Moscow, Sukhum, and Tiraspol.
