Comment by representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

South Ossetia paid attention to the tendentious and prejudiced resolution adopted by the U.S. Congress in support of the “territorial integrity” of Georgia. Once again, the bias position of the U.S. congressmen can be judged from the fact that they unreservedly support the position of Georgia and appeal to Russia to “call back recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia”. Obviously, not by chance these days Tbilisi hosts a meeting of NATO Military Committee, on which the chair of the committee, General Petr Pavel stated “about unwavering alliance's support to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Georgia” and called for Russia to “withdraw recognition” of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

South Ossetia has long been accustomed to the fact that rational arguments and reasons are perceived neither by Georgian politicians, nor by their Western partners. Nine years of peaceful life prevailing in the region after forcing Georgia to peace in August 2008, should have ensured one that nothing threatens security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia within its actual borders established after the dismissal of the Soviet Union.

In vain are Western partners of Georgia heating revanchist ambitions of Georgian authorities with illusions about “return” of foreign territories and withdrawal of the recognition. Recognition of the independence of South Ossetia by Russian Federation provided stability and security to the people of South Ossetia and neutralized threats emanating from the territory of Georgia. The irreversibility of the decision made by the Russian Federation on recognition of state independence of the Republic of South Ossetia and Moscow’s consistent course for further support to the independent state and its people in all areas of mutual co-operation have repeatedly been voiced by Russian authorities.

As for the increased attention to Georgia from the U.S. and NATO, located geographically non it vicinity, it means a quiet annexation of Georgian territory for gradually turning it into a base for NATO troops and further destabilization of the region for promoting their objectives.

Regular plying wood into the fire of unresolved issues of post-conflict settlement, leads to aggravation of the situation in the region. The increasing military support and NATO enlargement in Georgia also affects adversely the atmosphere of the GID.
