Commentary of the press bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia

pertaining the summit of US and Georgia presidents

According to information received, during the eventuated meeting of US and Georgia presidents was discussed not only the “model of democracy and transparency” of Georgia but the issue of American arms delivery to Georgia renewing, suspended after the armed aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia in August 2008.

Unfortunately, one should state that ipso facto of Saakashvili reception in White House, uncritical position of American authorities towards the processes ongoing in Georgia set thinking that US will support any, even oppressive regime in Georgia, avoiding public criticism of Georgian leadership.

Taking in account that that in adopted in 2012 US national defense expenses plan envisages renewing arms supply to Georgia, discussing of this matter during the meeting in White house and its realization can encourage Saakashvili to another aggressive actions to please his political ambitions.

In South Ossetia knows real predestination of armament several years supplying to Georgia from US and other states. Here also remember very well assurances of US high representatives that arms delivered to Georgia will never be used against South Ossetia. Tragedy of August 2008 happened mostly thanks to western armament.

And now at obvious US support Georgian authorities refuse to sign juridically binding document with South Ossetia of non-use of force, in practice sabotaging Geneva discussions on security in Transcaucasia.

In this connection Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia strongly object renewing of arms deliveries to Georgia and states that this can lead to another aggravation of situation in the region.
