Republic of South Ossetia is located оn the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range in the area of 3900 square meters. Тhe capital is the city of Tskhinval.
One-tenth of the surface occupied by the Republic of the foothills.
The rest of the territory - the mountainous terrain height from 850 to 3938 meters above sea level.
The highest point - Mount Halatsa (3938 m).

A meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia David Sanakoev with President of Italy-South Ossetia Friendship Society Professor Mauro Murgia took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia on 18 September 2013. At the meeting participated another member of the Italy-South Ossetia Friendship Society Mr.Giorgio Lorezi.


During the meeting were discussed questions of cooperation between South Ossetia and Italy-South Ossetia Friendship Society, was planed a concrete mechanism for further intensification of bilateral ties particularly in trade, economic and cultural spheres.

On 17 September 2013 is marked the fifth anniversary of since signing of the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and bilateral support between Russian Federation and Republic of South Ossetia. The significance of this date was commented by the Minster of Foreign Affairs of RSO David Sanakoev to State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company “IR”.


— The Agreement on friendship, cooperation and bilateral support between Russian Federation and Republic of South Ossetia, signed on 17 September 2008, is very important for our nation. It laid a bases for establishment of bilateral relations between our states and created solid guarantees for security and stability for our nation. Agreement on friendship, cooperation and bilateral support between Russian Federation and republic of South Ossetia opened for South Ossetia possibilities for economic and social development.

On 11 September 2013 a working meeting between delegation of South Ossetia to Geneva Discussions, headed by Plenipotentiary Presidential Envoy on post-conflict resolution Murat Kuzmich, and the Co-chairmen of Geneva Discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia from EU, OSCE and UN took place in Tskhinval.

Further to his working visit to Italy on 10 September 2013 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia David Sanakoev had a press-conference in Rome at a Conference Centre Roma Eventi. At the press-conference were present journalists from La Repubblica, Familia Cristiana, Eurasia, Itar-tass as well as representatives of the Russian Embassy in Italy.

Interview of the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia Kazbulat Tskhovrebov to State TV and Radio Company ‘IR’

On 9 September is five years since establishment of diplomatic relations between republic of South Ossetia and Russian Federation. The importance of this date was commented to STRC ‘IR’ by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of RSO Kazbulat Tskhovrebov.


— Today we celebrate a historical date – establishment of diplomatic ties between Republic of South Ossetia and Russian Federation which is a logical consequence of another significant date, on 26 August 2008 Russian Federation recognized state independence of Republic of South Ossetia. On 20 January 2009 was signed a Memorandum of understanding between Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation on cooperation in foreign affairs, which foresees Russia to facilitate development of relations between Republic of South Ossetia and third states, its participation in activities of international organizations as well as readiness of the Russian side to represent interests of Republic of South Ossetia in third countries through diplomatic representations of Russian Federation

On 4 September Minster of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia left on a business trip to Italy where he carried out a range of meetings.


On 4 September the Minister had a meeting with Lara Ricchetti, SEL party delegate. During the meeting the deputy expressed her confidence that the first visit of the Minister to Italy would be successful and ties between South Ossetia and Italy would be extending and strengthening.

On 5th September David Sanakoev was invited by Giuseppe Arzilli, owner of a private Gallery Arzilli, and participated in the opening ceremony of an exhibition called ‘Mountainous Abkhazia’ in Republic of San-Marino.

On 26 August 2013 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia David Sanakoev had a meeting with the Deputy Chairman of the Government of Republic of Abkhazia Beslan Eshba and with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Abkhazia Oleg Arshba, they arrived to the Republic for celebrations of the 5th anniversary since recognition of the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by Russian Federation. At the meeting participated Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of South Ossetia Alan Kochiev.


During the meeting the sides congratulated each other with this remarkable day that is a critical benchmark in the recent history of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Above that, during the meeting were discussed aspects of further development, interaction as well as issues of mutual cooperation.
