Republic of South Ossetia is located оn the southern slopes of the Main Caucasus Range in the area of 3900 square meters. Тhe capital is the city of Tskhinval.
One-tenth of the surface occupied by the Republic of the foothills.
The rest of the territory - the mountainous terrain height from 850 to 3938 meters above sea level.
The highest point - Mount Halatsa (3938 m).

On September 25, 2012, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in his speech at the 67th session of the UN GA accused Russia "of an attempt to influence political processes in Georgia by particular means of large-scale maneuvers and troop concentrations on the border" with supposedly occupied regions of Georgia.

On 10-11 October 2012 the twenty-first meeting in the frames of international discussions on security and stability in the Caucasus was held in Geneva. It was attended by the delegations from the Republic of South Ossetia, the Republic of Abkhazia, Georgia, the Russian Federation, the United States, as well as by the representatives from the EU, the UN and the OSCE. South Ossetian delegation was headed by M.K. Jioyev - Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy for post-conflict settlement.

in connection with an armed provocation of Georgia in the territory South Ossetia

On September 29, 2012, at 3:40 am, South Ossetia border post in the village of Karzman, Java region, was gunned with automatic firearms and grenade launchers. South Ossetian side did not open return fire, but in the course of search operations in the territory of the Republic of South Ossetia, Georgian Interior Ministry official was arrested near the state border and he was seized a NATO-standard automatic rifle with grenade launcher.
